When structures don't work anymore.

When your department’s workload increases dramatically, the old ways of working no longer work!

Introduction

What do you do when the business you support suddenly finds itself in the middle of a global pandemic and your workload hits the roof?  You’re responsible for getting the goods and services that business needs – and those goods and services quite literally could save lives.  Once the immediate shock wore off, our clients found themselves with a significantly bigger team and an unrecognisable workload.  Simply continuing in the same way – wasn’t an option.

The brief

The challenge was to find a better way to work.  They asked us to help them redesign their operating model and find a better way to deliver the vastly bigger service their business needed.  A way to react quickly to the business’ needs, once a decision was made, they needed the goods quickly.  Whilst also getting the best economies of scale.  That paradox – “give me personal service, but not the price attached to it!”

Why Blue Grape?

Having worked with this client before, they knew us.  They knew we would involve their people.  But they also knew we could cut through the noise and the complexities – and give them something simple and that balanced several priorities. Their stakeholders were demanding and we knew how to simplify things.

What did we do?

Like holding horseback – we steered them away from immediately writing a new organisation structure, and we took them back to basics.  Holding focus groups and interviews we got the whole team involved in understanding the whats, whys, hows, wheres of their operating model.  On zoom, in person and in writing – we found as many ways as possible to hear people’s views.  Weaving our Organisational Design magic and spells, we suggested a radically different operating model.  Bringing them closer to their internal customers, and the data to make great decisions by category.

The Results

We gave them a completely different model.  Based around multidisciplinary teams, who build relationships with their business units.  Supported by strong and credible experts influencing the customer teams and providing accurate data and analytics to drive decisions.  Yes, that was scary!  That was different.  And that was innovative.  And that was also what the team themselves were suggesting.  We just listened, tweaked and wrote it all down. Simply.  Clearly and without emotion.

Call-to-Action

Most organisations’ problems lie hidden in between boundaries and functions. It is usually not obvious what the actual problem is, where it lies, who is responsible, and who has the authority to solve it. But we can uncover that for you.  Get in touch and see how we can help.

I had the great fortune of working with Rhiannon on the delivery of a global systems integration project.

Rhiannon was instrumental in ensuring the platforms success spear heading our Group wide upskilling programme. Her personal commitment and willingness to confront the challenge of change was exceptional.

Without her personal drive, consultative mindset and unfailing customer centric approach in both responding to our ever-changing requirements and the broad development needs of our workforce we would not have effected the change we have.

Rhiannon very quickly gets to grip with the culture of an organisation and demonstrates the perfect style to build rapport with participants.

Her creativity in the design of workshops is exceptional and the way in which she combines blending learning elements worked incredibly well with the learners at my last organisation.

I recently had the pleasure of supporting Rhiannon with over 20 workshops embedding a new online performance review system and she maintained motivation and energy at all times.

One of the biggest challenges you can undertake in your job is to arrange a team away day. My advice for you is to ensure you know what you want to achieve, pick a suitable venue but most importantly pick a facilitator who can support you to achieve what you want.

Rhiannon managed to understand our problem, the best way to approach this and how to deliver on the day. After three phone calls her understanding of who we were and what we needed to do was amazing. The only negative feedback I have had from the team is why we didn’t get her in sooner.

My thanks for a great day and keeping us focused on some big and difficult topics. Would thoroughly recommend and will certainly ask Rhiannon for more support going forward.
