6 months after the programme ended, the learning still continued.


Medivet is on a journey – growing rapidly and growing strongly!  As the name suggests Medivet is a Vet business, with around 300 branches and more than 20 round-the-clock clinics across the UK. Medivet were looking for a partner to help them on their cultural change journey and knew their Area Managers were key to this. 

The Story of Medivet

One of their challenges was to grow the skills of their Area Managers to help them step up to the challenge of a bigger business.  And the business was only getting bigger with plans to take on Europe too!  Oh and they were spread over the country and at the front line of the operation meant they couldn’t take great swathes of time off for training!.  They asked us to help them with a development programme – not only to grow their Area Managers, but help them change the culture.

The brief….

Here’s the thing, most people become Vets because they want to work with animals.  People are just those things at the end of the dog’s lead.  Encouraging Vets to become Managers is hard, and those that do become Managers, often find people the challenge!  And those Area Managers who aren’t from a clinical background find it difficult to influence Vets.  That was our challenge – helping Managers build influential relationships with Vets, and helping Vets become influential Managers!  Because that was critical for Medivet to continue to grow.

Why Medivet Chose Blue Grape Talent

Medivet didn’t want the “usual”.  The usual would be too obvious to Vets (who are extremely clever and well educated).  We needed to find a way to show how People featured in animal care!

What did we do?

What did we do?  A small bite sized programme, some two hour sessions and lots of one hour learning cafes.  Short, sharp and to the point – just like being on the front line of Operations!  We built small learning communities so they comfortably learnt from each other.  We made zoom sessions interesting, interactive and punchy!   We showed them we understood their world.  It helped that we’re all animal lovers too!

The Results

Succession planning changed – suddenly the business saw hidden talent in people they hadn’t previously seen. Performance was viewed differently – by the participants and their Managers.  Learning groups set up as part of the programme just continued! People talked and shared knowledge and information long after the end of the programme.  Culture change leapt forward one massive step from within – Area Managers recognised their role and their impact on other people!

One of the biggest challenges you can undertake in your job is to arrange a team away day. My advice for you is to ensure you know what you want to achieve, pick a suitable venue but most importantly pick a facilitator who can support you to achieve what you want.

Rhiannon managed to understand our problem, the best way to approach this and how to deliver on the day. After three phone calls her understanding of who we were and what we needed to do was amazing. The only negative feedback I have had from the team is why we didn’t get her in sooner.
